A celebration of the power of music with holiday songs and merriment
featuring our seniors, testimonials, and operatic entertainment.
Every three seconds, someone develops dementia. One in every three seniors dies of Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. Another 10 million people worldwide have Parkinson’s disease.
However, a nonprofit organization in Southern California is using a unique form of music therapy — and musical support groups — to “foster a community between musicians and singers, families, friends, and caregivers, all thriving on the socialization of music making,” says Carol Port Rosenstein, co-founder and co-director of Music Mends Minds (MMM).
Her husband, Irwin Bennett Rosenstein, the other co-founder, has suffered from Parkinson’s Disease now for 15 years, but Carol has learned that “cells within the brain rekindle themselves when prompted by old memories, important life events, and by music”.
Though Irwin has Parkinson’s symptoms, such as trouble walking and constantly shaking arms, “every time he played the piano, he would resurrect, recognize his environment, and it was like he had a dose of medication,” added Carol. “I was watching the effect of music therapy act like dopamine, but even more impactful for its natural and positive side effects.”
Shortly after this discovery in 2014, Carol found a local school to share some space, invited about 30 other curious folks to show up, and a core of four musicians created “The 5th Dementia” band, a playful spin on the former “The 5th Dimension” musical group from the mid-1960s.
- Today, MMM has nearly 20 musical groups, hosts thrice weekly Zoom Sing-A-Long Sessions (Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:00 – 2:00pm PST)
