I have hearing loss.
And anyone with a hearing deficiency will tell you that it’s so much more difficult to hear conversations in restaurants that are a cacophony of kitchen noise, loud music and patrons trying to make themselves heard over everything else.
That’s why I was pleased to hear about a San Francisco Neopolitan pizzeria that is boldly going where no restaurant has gone before: silent dining.
Mozzeria in the Mission District is owned by a deaf couple, Russell and Melody Stein. It’s the only restaurant in The City that is owned by—and staffed by—deaf employees. In fact, this is such a unique restaurant that it’s now going to open a second location in Washington, D.C., adjacent to Gallaudet University, which is a world-renowned school for the deaf and those with significant hearing loss.
S.F. and D.C. Are Just The Beginning
Mozzeria’s founders received a grant from the Communication Service for the Deaf Social Venture Fund of several million dollars to expand nationally with Austin, TX, as another possible venue.
Furthermore, the Steins want to create communities around deaf people, coordinate online training for any businesses who want to implement American Sign Language into their companies, and expand the hiring of deaf workers because approximately 40% of deaf people are eitherunemployed or underemployed.
Mozzeria restaurants feature Neopolitan pizzas, including its most popular margherita pie (tomatoes and basil) and the more exotic Peking duck pizza with hoisin sauce, as well as small dishes, local beer and wines. It also has two food trucks that travel throughout the Bay Area.
But the most delicious factor might be the quiet. The Steins provide paper and writing utensils so diners can communicate with each other in silence, without having to compete with any music.
