Charles Schultz once wrote a book entitled, “Happiness is a Warm Puppy”. That phrase epitomizes pet therapy at senior living communities.
According to The Mayo Clinic, “Pet therapy is gaining fans in health care and beyond.” This broad term “includes animal-assisted therapy and other animal-assisted activities… a growing field that uses dogs and other animals to help people recover from or better cope with health problems, such as heart disease, cancer and mental health disorders.”
Dog Day Afternoons Are A Big Hit
Many senior living residents have small pets who are more than welcome to socialize daily at the dog run or in the lobby of their campus. Everyone from the residents to team members to visitors enjoy playing with the dogs and plying them with treats.
After all, while pets like dogs and cats make people feel good, science proves that being with pets can actually be therapeutic. In fact, only 15 minutes of bonding with an animal enables your brain to increase the production of a feel-good hormone known as serotonin, while lowering levels of a stress hormone called cortisol.
National Police Dog Foundation Events
One of our senior living clients in Southern California hosted an event recently with a demonstration by the local National Police Dog Foundation who proudly showcased their local K-9 units at work and at play with their handlers.
The well-trained, four-legged heroes also helped raise money at the event which was destined to become an annual tribute to the power of pet therapy.
So whether you and your pet want to have a positive impact on the life of an older person, or you love spending quality time with your own small animal, pet therapy can be amazingly therapeutic.
